Sherwood Park Minor Hockey

The SPMHA Community Stream is the main program offered by Sherwood Park Minor Hockey. It features 1300+ Sherwood Park based athletes from 4-18 years of age, combining to form over 75 teams that compete in the Edmonton Federation Hockey League in the U9, U11, U13, U15 & U18 divisions. It also features a house league program for our U7 & Discovery divisions. Our SPMHA teams compete against teams from other hockey associations in Edmonton and it's surrounding areas. All teams are tiered based on the Alberta One Standardized Tiering Model, ensuring that teams are matched against other teams of similar skill sets.

Discovery U7 U9 U11 U13 U15 U18

Discovery

The Discovery program is perfect for beginning skaters learning to move and skate in hockey gear. Here's what you need to know:

Age Group: Required for players born in 2020 and optional for those born in 2019 who are new to hockey.
Skill Development: Players learn basic movement and skating skills through structured drills for about 40 minutes of each 60-minute session.
Fun Activities: The remaining 20 minutes are spent on fun, non-competitive activities to reinforce skills.
Structure: Players are divided into groups based on the number of registrants. There are no scheduled games, only practices.
Season Schedule: Runs from late September to mid-March with 1-hour sessions on Sunday mornings at the Strathcona Olympiette Centre.
Season Finale: Ends with a Mini-Jamboree (games) on the last weekend.

While not required for U7, Discovery is highly recommended for new skaters. Join us for a season of fun and foundational hockey skills!

Our U7 program is a fun and engaging introduction to hockey for young children. Here are the key details:

Season Structure: Practices begin the season, with games starting in December against other Sherwood Park teams.
Evaluations: Players are evaluated to create balanced teams, with no tiering at this level.
Eligibility: 5 & 6 year old (2018/19 born) players that meet the core skill requirements and are physically and mentally ready.
Skills Focus: The program emphasizes forward and backward skating, stopping, puck handling, and basic hockey skills.
Positions: Players rotate through all positions, including goalie. There are no dedicated goalies at this age.
Games: Games are fun and non-competitive, with no scorekeeping. Half-ice games are played with bumpers, allowing two games simultaneously.
Locations: Most sessions are held at Ardrossan West or Broadmoor Arena on Saturdays and Sundays, though times and locations may vary.
Schedule: The program includes around 12 games and 30 practices from October to March, excluding tournaments.
Focus: Emphasis is on skating, basic hockey skills, and team concepts.

The U9 Community Hockey program provides a structured environment for young players of varying skill levels. Here's what you need to know:

Age Group: Open to children born in 2016 and 2017.
Skill Levels: Welcomes both beginners and more experienced players.
Registration: Players can join U9 without having participated in Discovery or U7.
Team Formation: Tiered teams of 16 to 20 players are formed after evaluations in September to ensure balanced skill levels.
Game Structure: Games are half-ice for the first portion of the season and held throughout Edmonton and surrounding areas as part of the Edmonton Federation Hockey League (EFHL). In the later portion of the season, teams are able to transition to full-ice games.
Practice Locations: Practices are held within Strathcona County, mainly in Sherwood Park.
Schedule: Includes 20 games and about 40 practices from September to March, with most sessions on weekends and some on weekday evenings.
Game Officials: Games are officiated by referees.

U11

The U11 Community Hockey program provides a tiered structure for players with varying levels of experience to develop their skills. Here are the key details:

Age Group: Open to children born in 2014 and 2015.
Skill Levels: Suitable for players with or without prior U7 or U9 experience.
Team Formation: Tiered teams of 15 to 17 players are created after evaluations over three or more skates in September to ensure balanced skill levels.
Game Structure: Games are held throughout Edmonton and the surrounding area as part of the Edmonton Federation Hockey League (EFHL). Games last 1 hour, are officiated by referees, and scores are kept.
Practice Locations: Practices are held within Strathcona County, mainly in Sherwood Park.
Schedule: Includes 20+ games and 40+ practices from September to March. Sessions are on weekday afternoons, evenings, and weekends, with potential for a few weekday morning practices.
Goalie Information:
- Tiers 1-3: Regular goalies play only as goalies unless evaluated as skaters.
- Tiers 4-6: Any player can play goalie for at least 2 practices and 1 game per season.
Development Focus: Emphasizes skating and hockey skills tailored to the team's skill level.

U13

The U13 Community Hockey program offers a tiered structure for players with varying levels of experience. Here are the key details:

Age Group: Open to children born in 2011 and 2012.
Skill Levels: Suitable for players with or without prior experience in younger divisions.
Team Formation: Tiered teams of 15 to 19 players are created after evaluations over three or more skates in September to ensure balanced skill levels.
Registration Options:
- AA Tryouts: Players interested in trying out for AAA/AA must register with the Sherwood Park Kings Athletic Club (SPKAC). If not selected for a SPKAC AA team, they return to SPMHA Hockey and join the SPMHA U13 program.
- A (Tier 1) Tryouts: Players not trying out for AA but wishing to try out for A (Tier 1) must register through SPMHA. During registration, they need to select the competitive stream option, which includes additional fees for tryouts and the Competitive Enhanced Development program.
Game Structure: Games are held throughout Edmonton and the surrounding area as part of the Edmonton Federation Hockey League (EFHL). Games last 1.5 hours, are officiated by referees, and scores are kept.
Practice Locations: Practices are held within Strathcona County, mainly in Sherwood Park.
