Discovery
Discovery is a program for beginning skaters who are learning to move and skate while wearing hockey equipment. 

  • Learn to Skate (2016 YOB).
  • Discovery is not a prerequisite for the Initiation program.
  • For the 2020-21 season those born in 2016 are designated to the Discovery program.
  • This structured program teaches basic movement and skating through development drills for about 2/3 of each 60 minute ice slot.
  • The remaining 1/3 of the session is devoted to playing non-competitive fun activities that develop the skills learned in the practice.
  • The players will be divided into groups depending on the number of registrants.
  • Non-competitive
  • Structured program
  • No scheduled games throughout the season - practices only.
  • Typically includes Mini-Jamboree at the end of the season.
  •  45 minute sessions from October to March
  • Sessions are typically held at Broadmoor Arena on Saturday Mornings.

4-year old's MUST only participate in the Discovery program
​Players MUST be 4 years old as of December 31 to register into the Discovery Program.


U6 (Formerly Initiation 1)
U6 is an introduction to hockey where the children will have only practices for first part of the season, and will be introduced to games in December.

  • Introduction to Hockey Skills. (2015 YOB)
  • A child can register in U6 even if they have not participated in Discovery.
  • Team selection is randomized.  There is no evaluations or tiering at this level.
  • Families with siblings in both U6 & U7 can be considered for placement on one team.  Which level is at the discretion of the Division Director
  • This program focuses on development of forward and backward skating, stopping, puck handling, and an introduction to the game of hockey.
  • Locations of practices vary, but most practices will be held at Broadmoor Arena
  • One hour sessions run twice a week from October to March.

U7 (Formerly Initiation 2)
U6 is an introduction to hockey where the children will have only practices for first part of the season, and will be introduced to games against other Sherwood Park teams in December

  • Evaluations will be held at the U7 level, but only to create balanced teams.  There is no tiering at the U7 level.
  • Introduction to Small Area Games (2014 YOB).
  • 6-year olds who have never play Discovery and/or U6 before may still be able to register in U7 if they meet the core skill requirements and are physically and mentally capable. They will be assessed at evaluations.
  • For the 2020-21 season those born in 2014 may register for the U7 program.
  • Families with siblings in both U6 & U7 can be considered for placement on one team.  Which level is at the discretion of the Division Director
  • This program focuses on development of forward and backward skating, stopping, puck handling, and an introduction to the game of hockey.
  • Third-ice games are played (i.e. boards separate the ice surface into thirds and two games are played at the same time on the end surfaces with active rest in the middle).
  • Locations of practices vary, but most games and practices will be held at Ardrossan West or Broadmoor Arena on Saturdays and Sundays
  • Games are non-competitive with no score kept.
  • No regular goalies – players rotate through all positions, including goaltender.
  • Emphasis on skating and learning basic hockey skills with an introduction to team concept.
  • Approximately 14 third-ice games and 26 third-ice practices from October to March.

U9 Community (Formerly Novice)
U9 hockey involves the formation of tiered teams that play throughout Edmonton and the surrounding area through the Edmonton Federation Hockey League (EFHL). The players will vary from beginners that are learning basic hockey skills to those that have more experience. 

  • A child can register in U9 even if they have not participated in Discovery or U6/7
  • For the 2020-21 season those born in 2012 and 2013 may register for the U9 program.
  • Tiered teams of 17 to 20 players are formed after an evaluation process that occurs over multiple skates during the month of September.
  • The purpose of tiering is to have similarly skilled players on each team that are also playing against similarly skilled players from other clubs throughout the EFHL program.
  • Games will be held throughout the city and surrounding area.
  • Locations of practices vary, but will all be within Strathcona County, predominantly in Sherwood Park.
  • Most games and practices will be held on the weekends, but there will be weekday evening ice times throughout the year.
  • Games will be played with Referees, however no scores will be kept as U9 is under the rules of Hockey Alberta's Intro to Hockey program.
  • All games will be half-ice.
  • Development of skating and hockey skills considers the skill level of the team.
  •  18 or more games and approximately 40 practices (all half ice) from September to March, mostly on Saturday and Sunday, but will include weekday afternoon/evening.

U9 Recreation (New for 2020-21)
U9 Recreation hockey involves the formation of non-tiered teams that play through the Edmonton Federation Hockey League (EFHL) Recreation Division. The players will vary from beginners that are learning basic hockey skills to those that have more experience. This is a lower cost, lower commitment option, does not include practices, only games.

  • A child can register in U9 recreation even if they have not participated in younger divisions
  • For the 2020-21 season those born in 2012 and 2013 may register for the U9 Recreation program.
  • Balanced non-tiered teams of 17 to 20 players are formed based on number of registrants.
  • Games may be held throughout the city and surrounding area, but will largely be focused in areas closer to Sherwood Park.
  • Games will be held on the weekends, there will be no practices other than an initial meet and greet practice at the start of the season.
  • Games will be played with Referees, however no scores will be kept.
  • All games will be half-ice.
  •  18 games from October to March.  All games will be on weekends.

U11 Community (Formerly Atom)
U11 hockey continues with the formation of tiered teams that play throughout Edmonton and the surrounding area. The players will still vary from beginners that are learning basic hockey skills to those that have more experience. 

  • A child can register in Atom even if they have not participated in U6/7 or U9 hockey.
  • For the 2020-21 season those born in 2010 and 2011 may register for the Atom program.
  • Tiered teams of 15 to 19 players are formed after an evaluation process that occurs over 3 or more skates during the month of September.
  • The purpose of tiering is to have similarly skilled players on each team that are also playing against similarly skilled players from other clubs throughout the EFHL program.
  • Games will be held throughout the Edmonton & surrounding area.
  • Locations of practices vary, but will all be within Strathcona County, mostly within Sherwood Park.
  • Games and practices will be held on both weekday afternoons, evenings and weekends.
  • Games are 1 hour long, and will be played with Referees and scores are kept.
  • There are regular goalies in tiers 1-3.  Goalies will be allowed to play non-goalie positions when not in net only if they have evaluated at this level as a skater.
  • In tiers 4-6, any player who wishes to play goal may do so for at least 2 practices and 1 game per season, and more if practical.
  • Development of skating and hockey skills considers the skill level of the team.
  •  20 or more games and 40 or more practices (~50% will be shared) from September to March.  Most games will be Saturday or Sunday.  Practices will be weekday afternoon and evenings as well as weekends.  There is potential for a limited number of weekday morning practices.

U11 Recreation (New for 2020-21)
U11 Recreation hockey involves the formation of non-tiered teams that play through the Edmonton Federation Hockey League (EFHL) Recreation Division. The players will vary from beginners that are learning basic hockey skills to those that have more experience. This is a lower cost, lower commitment option, does not include practices, only games.

  • A child can register in U11 Recreation even if they have not participated in younger divisions
  • For the 2020-21 season those born in 2010 and 2011 may register for the U11 Recreation program.
  • Balanced non-tiered teams of 17 to 20 players are formed based on number of registrants.
  • Games may be held throughout the city and surrounding area, but will largely be focused in areas closer to Sherwood Park.
  • Games will be held on the weekends, there will be no practices other than an initial meet and greet practice at the start of the season.

U13 Community (Formerly Peewee)
U13 hockey continues with the formation of tiered teams that play throughout Edmonton and the surrounding area.  The players will vary from beginner players to those that have more experience. 

  • A child can register in U13 even if they have not participated in younger divisions.
  • For the 2020-21 season those born in 2008 and 2009 may register for the U13 program.
  • Tiered teams of 15 to 19 players are formed after an evaluation process that occurs over 3 or more skates during the month of September. Players wanting to try out for the AA teams will register to tryout earlier with the Sherwood Park Kings Athletic Club (SPKAC) . They would return to SPMHA Hockey if not selected for a SPKAC AA Team.
  • The purpose of tiering is to have similarly skilled players on each team that are also playing against similarly skilled players from other clubs throughout the EFHL program.
  • Games will be held throughout Edmonton and the surrounding area.
  • Locations of practices vary, but will all be within Strathcona County, mostly within Sherwood Park.
  • Games and practices will be held on both weekday evenings and weekends.
  • Games are 1.5 hours long, and will be played with Referees and scores are kept.
  • There are regular goalies that have evaluated as goalies on most teams – number of goalies for the particular year permitting.
  • Development of skating and hockey skills considers the skill level of the team.
  •  20 or more games and 40 or more practices ( ~25% will be shared) from September to March. Ice times will be on weekday afternoons, evenings and weekends as well.  There is potential for a limited number of weekday morning practices.

U13 Recreation (New for 2020-21)
U13 Recreation hockey involves the formation of non-tiered teams that play through the Edmonton Federation Hockey League (EFHL) Recreation Division. U15 hockey continues with the formation of tiered teams that play throughout Edmonton and the surrounding area.  The players will vary from beginner players to those that have more experience. 

  • A child can register in U15 even if they have not participated in younger divisions.
  • For the 2020-21 season those born in 2006 and 2007 may register for the U15 program.
  • Tiered teams of 16 to 19 players are formed after an evaluation process that occurs over 3 or more skates during the month of September. Players wanting to try out for the AA or AAA teams will register to tryout earlier with the Sherwood Park Kings Athletic Club (SPKAC).  They would return to SPMHA Hockey if not selected for a AA or AAA Team.
